What is that Girl Night Routine?

That girl night routine is a set of activities or habits you practice before bed to encourage and promote self-care and help you prioritize taking yourself and spending time unwinding at the end of each day.

That girl night routine checklist encourages you to indulge in healthy habits that promote quality sleep and self-care.

Although the concept of creating your that girl night routine checklist seems more of a Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok trend portraying the lifestyle of an influencer who goes to bed or pretends to go to bed at 10 after having a cozy evening routine.

This may be the case for some. However, That girl night routine is all about self-care and putting yourself first, and having a nighttime routine without chaos benefits your health.

Benefits of Having That Girl Routine Checklist

If your nighttime routine is terrible, you’ll experience poor sleep, eventually leading to poor sleeping habits, insomnia, and unproductive days.

However, when you intentionally practice a healthy evening routine, you create sleep habits promoting self-care and quality relaxation.

You’ll experience good sleep and wake up feeling supercharged and less anxious.

For instance, throughout the first 3 quarters of 2022, I experienced insomnia.

And Whenever it’s bedtime, I’ll spend hours on the bed rolling from side to side without falling asleep, which eventually takes a toll on my health and productivity at work.

After creating my That Girl night routine checklist, I started tweaking it to suit me.

And since December, I no longer dread bedtime; once it’s 9 o’clock, my body starts shutting down, and If I’m still on my laptop, I’ll have to turn off work and start preparing for bed.

Creating a night routine that is easy to follow yet encourages self-care and helps you fall in love with bedtime is a game-changer. Here are some benefits of creating a night routine;

  • Helps you sleep better.
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • You’ll become more productive
  • Encourages self-care and relaxation.
  • Enables you to stay intentional and focus on your self-growth journey.

18 Relaxing “That Girl” Night Routine Ideas in 2024

There is no perfect way to order your night routine, and it’s not compulsory you practice everything on this night routine list.

Choose easy activities that can help you relax and enjoy a quality evening routine and night rest.

Therefore, feel free to rearrange, and select items from this “that girl night routine checklist” and make them yours.

1. Set Aside Time

The first step to having a good nighttime routine is intentionally set and spend time with yourself.

Whether we admit it or not, our body thrives on routine, and if you consistently do something every day over a few weeks, your body picks it as a habit and will adjust accordingly.

For example: After switching from being a night owl, I had to adjust my routine and learn to wake up early at 5 a.m. daily.

And eventually, I started trying out different night routines until I found what worked for me.

Now, I wrap up whatever activity I have before 8;00 p.m. every day, and at 9 p.m., I kick start my self-care night routine.

Here’s the twist; If I’m on my laptop until 8:30 p.m., I’ll start feeling uncomfortable and unproductive, and sometimes, it seems my brain is no longer interested in working (lol).

This is because my body thrives on relaxing and unwinding once it’s 8 p.m.

Although, 8 p.m. may seem too late for some people to start their evening routine.

PS: I usually have dinner from 6 p.m. -6:30 p.m., and I’ll go back to work to wrap up for the day because I work from home, and running two businesses is no joke.

I know this is a lengthy story about how I set time for my “that girl night routine.” However, this is because this nighttime routine guide is practical and realistic.

Therefore, set a specific time when you shut down everything and relax. Even if you work from home.

2 . Unwind

Perhaps you had a terrific day and want to relax and catch your breath. Think about activities or actions that tell your body, “, Hey, it’s time to drop your hardworking pants and breathe.”

Turning off my laptop and switching from bright to dim light is an instant signal to my brain that it’s time to relax and unwind.

While for some people, it may be as simple as taking off their shoes and sitting on the couch.

So what signals your body that it’s time to rest and enjoy your evening?

However, if you’re yet to discover yours, don’t worry. You’ll figure out what works for you when you consistently practice your night routine.

3 . Prepare the Environment

Preparing the environment and unwinding goes together when creating that girl night routine that suits you and helps you relax.

Think about all the things that make you feel at peace; it could be turning on gentle music, making your bed comfortable, changing bedsheets, decluttering your room, and sweeping (ah, a clean and clutter-free apartment works magic for me).

Or turning on your diffusers, dim lights, scented candles, warm blankets, and clean night wears (I love the smell of clean clothes).

Because setting up your environment can help you relax and enjoy your nighttime routine.

4. Practice Light Exercise and Move Your Body

Moving your body or exercising for at least 15-30 minutes helps you sleep well, and if you work from the desk like me, moving your body helps stretch those muscles and helps you feel better.

You can do yoga for 30 minutes or dance around the house while doing other activities.

I enjoy listening to songs, shaking my body while organizing my apartment, and preparing for bedtime.

Additionally, engaging in easy and gentle activities like yoga, stretching, and dancing before bed is calming, as you don’t want to engage in activities that make it difficult to fall asleep quickly.

5. Take Out the Makeup

Do you have makeup on, or are there self-care practices you like to do before showering?

Cleanse your face with moist makeup remover cleansing wipes if you have makeup on.

Because removing makeup before getting into the shower is ideal, as makeup products tend to be sticky.

Instead of using water, I use these moist makeup remover cleansing Face wipes

And If you have more time to spend before bedtime, you can indulge in a facial massage or use a nourishing facemask for a few minutes before entering the shower.

PS: I don’t use facemasks daily because I try to keep my that girl night routine checklist short, so it doesn’t feel like a chore.

6. Enjoy a Self Care Shower

Some people showering is the first thing they do when they get home. While for others, they shower before having dinner.

I have dinner early, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., because I don’t want to deal with indigestion or bloating.

So, I eat before showering. Showering is the last thing I do before lying on the bed for the rest of my night routine, like reading or journaling.

Whichever way you choose to line up your routine is up to you.

However, a self-care shower differs from a regular shower, where you hop in and out of the bathroom.

The self-care shower is relaxing and rejuvenating; it’s like writing a love letter to your body but from the bathroom.

For self-care showers, you’ll take your time to treat your body and relax.

Read; How to have the best self-care shower and make your “that girl night routine” feel like heaven on earth.

You can romanticize your shower time by adding bath booms, soothing salts, and essential oils and showering with warm water.

7. Practice After Shower Body Care

That girl’s night routine checklist without after-shower body care and skin care is a complete NO!

Skin care plays a vital role in our nighttime routine, and it’s the next step after showering.

Before curating my night routine, I would hit the bed immediately after bating because I cared less about my skin, and this was a disaster as my skin always looked dry and rough.

Now, I practice skincare at night because skin scare isn’t only when you go out. Your night routine is the best time to practice skin care.

So start by patting yourself dry with a soft towel, and be gentle when cleaning your face.

Here is a simple Relaxing Night Routine After Shower Care

  • Moisturize your body with body lotion, and don’t forget underarms and dry areas such as elbows, knees, and feet -I use E54 body lotion since I have sensitive skin.
  • Apply hair oil and massage your scalp.
  • Lounge for a few minutes with a face mask
  • Apply light moisturizer, and next, your vitamin C serum.

8. Dress For The Night

After caring for your body, it’s time to wear comfy clothes.

I don’t know about you, but I love looking beautiful and smelling nice when going to bed.

Additionally, what you wear affects the quality of your sleep and how soon you’ll fall asleep.

So, avoid wearing itchy or tight clothes at night and allow your body to breathe and relax.

Wear soft, silky, cotton, breathable, and non -restrictive nighties when choosing your nightwear.

And because wearing nightwear made from good materials that regulate temperatures is the best, I wear a set of nighties based on the weather. These are my favorite I got from Amazon.

9. Eat a Healthy & Delicious Dinner

It’s time for a healthy and delicious dinner!

Your “that girl” night routine is incomplete without throwing in some healthy plates of meals. I know you want to munch on snacks, but that’s unhealthy.

One of the habits of that girl is that she is intentional about what she eats, when, and how she eats.

So, if you want to become that girl and build a healthy routine that promotes good rest, eat your dinner early to avoid bloating and eat green (veggies).

Eating while seeing watching my favorite show on TV helps me decompress and serves as a distraction for me.

I know you’re thinking, “Isn’t eating and watching TV terrible?”. It’s about creating a night routine that will help me unwind. So why not?

10. Journal Your Thoughts

By now, you know I’m a huge fan of journaling, as it’s a great tool to quantify my emotions and purify my heart and thoughts on paper.

So, journaling is at the top of my that girl night routine checklist.

Because when you journal, either for self-love, personal growth, or to know yourself deeper, it helps you reflect on what happened during the day.

Journaling is a powerful tool that allows you to unload your thoughts on paper and eventually helps you release stress.

In your journal, you can share your experience, relieve the beautiful memories you experienced during the day, and discover excellent and unhealthy patterns in your daily routine.

PS: You should journal every night.

Journaling as a part of your nighttime routine is a beautiful and wholesome experience.

And for journaling, I swear by the Five-Minute Journal and use it daily.

11. Reflect and Review your Day

After journaling your thoughts, the next thing is to reflect on the day. Practicing Self-reflection and reviewing my day daily has been a game changer as it allows me to introspect and spend time with my thoughts.

I practice daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly reflection.

Thus, helping me stay on track and intentionally live my life in alignment with my passion and purpose.

The truth is; many people ignore the power of reflection.

Daily reflection can help you relax, process your thoughts and emotions, and better understand yourself.

Imagine after experiencing a good day, you’ll get home and ask yourself self-reflection questions such as;

  • Why did today go well?
  • What can I do to make my day better?
  •  Did I accomplish my tasks for today?
  • On a scale of 1-10, how motivated am I about my goals at the end of this week? What can I do to boost my enthusiasm and drive?
  • Did I show myself compassion and love today?

Kindly note; reflection doesn’t have to take so much of your time – you can spend 10-20 minutes reflecting and journaling.

Also, keep it short, simple, and straight to the point, as you don’t want to overwhelm yourself and start feeling stressed out.

12. Plan for the Next Day

One of the best habits of being that girl is planning.

Because planning your day can help you have a good night routine.

And I know you’re thinking, “How?” since many people consider planning as a chore rather than a means o relaxing.

Planning helps you prepare and organize your day. So, In your planner or to-do list, organize your entire activities for the day, from personal activities to work, errands, or anything else that requires your attention.

I prefer making my to-do list for the next day just before I go to bed. However, you may make your to-do list right after work for the day.

The most important thing is that you plan your day.

Okay, now it’s time for the good stuff; let’s get down to other fun things in that girl night routine checklist.

13. Relax and Watch Your Favorite Show

Now we are done with other activities, you can head straight to bed, relax and watch your favorite show or sit in the living room to do this.

One of my favorite ways to relax after juggling life is watching K-drama(lol).

I spend about an hour and a few minutes watching a new episode of any Korean series I follow.

While for you, it may be a reality Tv show, drama, comedy, or something you enjoy watching.

So, get a cozy blanket, your favorite snack (if you’re into late-night snacking because I’m not), and indulge in screen time.

Now I know you’re thinking, “Isn’t watching Tv bad for sleep?”. I reduce screen time by at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

I don’t know about you, but the feeling I get when I switch off the lights and put on my Tv to relax is out of this world.

Additionally, I avoid watching news channels during my night routine because it’s sometimes filled with sad news that causes anxiety.

14. Read a Book

One of the things about that girl is that she always turns everything to look beautiful, from a simple night routine to an aesthetic night routine.

And what’s the perfect way to throw some aesthetics with a touch of self-improvement into your that girl night routine, if not by reading books?

After all, the idea of being that girl and creating that girl night routine is to indulge in self-care and engage in a nighttime routine that promotes your well-being.

Imagine reading your favorite romance book with scented candles or diffusers on as you, and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of this world.

So grab a cozy blanket, make yourself a cup of tea or your favorite drink, pick up a book, and indulge.

Realistically, I try not to fill my nighttime routine with activities. Instead, I keep it short and engage more in relaxation.

So if I’m not reading a fiction book, I read for 30 minutes during my nighttime routine.

However, if it’s fiction, sometimes I skip watching a movie at night and read for an hour.

15. Throw in Your Hobbies

What are your hobbies? Our hobbies help us to relax, and “that girl” knows this.

So, if you desire to create the perfect “that girl night routine checklist” that promotes your well-being and helps you fall asleep faster, consider throwing in your hobbies.

Do you enjoy journaling, listening to songs and podcasts, painting on a book while in bed, meditation, or gentle stretching?

So, instead of scrolling endlessly on Social media, which may cause you to sleep late at night, engage in mindful activities and hobbies you enjoy.

16. Put Your Phone Away and Turn on Do Not Disturb

After speaking to my partner right before bedtime, I turn off my phone and connect it to power to charge.

Because if I have my phone close or turned on, I may spend more time scrolling on social media.

And this is the same for almost anyone. Putting off your phone will allow you to enjoy the calmness of your nighttime and help you fall asleep faster.

And when you go to bed early, you’ll feel your best self, energized and productive in the morning.

Although you don’t need to turn off your phone, you can switch it to “DND” mode or take it far away from you (e.g., keeping it far away from your bed).

17. Affirm, and Mediate

Daily affirmations are a game changer and can help you feel less anxious, boost your confidence, and help you relax.

And if you love meditating, spending 10–15 minutes can help you relax ad sleep immediately after your back hits the bed.

18. Say Your Prayers

Do you pray before turning off the light for the night? Well, I do.

So, take a minute and say your prayers before going to bed. Praying brings me so much peace and assurance.
